Our history
Richard Carr-Gomm OBE – who also set up the Abbeyfield and Morpeth Societies – bought a house with friends in Bermondsey, south London, and so established the first Carr-Gomm Society in 1965. His aim was to offer a safe home and support to lonely and vulnerable people. Inspired by Richard’s vision, other people set up similar societies in numerous towns around England.
Care was offered in shared houses and as demand grew, so did Carr-Gomm's services. In the 1990’s the many separate societies joined to form one entity with a head office in London, to enable better sharing of resources and a consistent standard of service to Carr-Gomm's tenants.
Today, Carr-Gomm has over 300 housing schemes and other services including self-contained flats, homeless projects, floating support for families and an award-winning client involvement programme. We support around 3,000 people a year to gain more control over their future and improve their quality of life.
