New service provides better care for Birmingham adults
18th August 2006
Local MP gave her backing today to a new housing service to help disadvantaged adults move into their own home.
Gisela Stuart MP, Edgbaston, launched the service run by national housing charity, Carr-Gomm, at their offices in Edgbaston.
The resettlement service, which is funded by Birmingham Council’s Supporting People Fund aims to help disadvantaged and vulnerable adults in the city to find suitable accommodation and live independently.
Carr-Gomm staff work with adults who have experienced crises in their lives and may have been homeless or lived in temporary accommodation. Resettlement workers support people to find a suitable place to live and help them move into independent living. Service users continue to receive support for 6 months initially and then further support can be provided if needed.
Gisela Stuart MP Edgbaston, said: “I welcome the launch of this important and worthwhile service. The service has the potential to help change the lives of many local people by giving them their own independence and a home they can call their own.”
Local Councillor Deirdre Alden, who joined in the celebrations said: “Carr-Gomm has a proven record of success of improving the lives of people requiring housing support. I am certain that the service will help Birmingham Council meet its commitment to help disadvantaged sections of the community access suitable high quality housing. I wish the service and those who use it every success in the future.”
Deborah Stone, Area Business Manager said: “With the support of the council and other agencies we have developed a much needed service for vulnerable people which will increase the quality of their lives. The resettlement service will give service users the opportunity to have what many of us of us take for granted - a safe and secure home but with the added support from staff to ensure that they make the transition to living independently.”
“We have been providing housing services in Birmingham for over 20 years. The resettlement service complements our existing work and staff are looking forward to working with our service users and our partners.”
